The working principle of a planetary gear system
Planetary gear systems, also known as epicyclic gear trains, consist of a central sun gear, multiple planet gears mounted on a carrier, and an outer ring gear. This compact arrangement allows for high torque transmission in a small space while maintaining excellent efficiency—often exceeding 95%.
Planetary gear systems work like a miniature solar system, with a central sun gear, orbiting planet gears, and an outer ring gear, all held by a planet carrier, allowing for high torque and compact size by transmitting power through the interconnected gears. Power enters the sun gear, causing planets to rotate and orbit, engaging the ring gear; by holding one component (sun, planet carrier, or ring) stationary and driving another, different gear ratios and directions (speed reduction, overdrive, or reverse) are achieved. As the sun gear rotates, it drives the planet gears, which simultaneously mesh with the stationary or rotating ring gear, enabling various speed and torque outputs depending on which component is held fixed or driven.
